v What is your major concern for the 2025-2026 school year?
We would like to see our Science scores show an increase, and our Math and ELA scores show even more increase. We have concerns for staffing in that we have had multiple changes to professional staff this school year. Three professional staff have taken positions elsewhere and while we are happy to see them move forward in their careers, we hope the staffing changes do not impact our student scores. We currently have three long-term substitute teachers serving in the building, even after posting positions multiple times. We would like to have staffing to provide tiered instruction, such as through a teacher serving as an interventionist. We have implemented PBIS strategies in hopes of seeing a decrease in behavior infractions. We see for the first month of school that Fairdale has the fourth highest attendance rate for all elementary schools in Raleigh County, and work to see that trend improve. Regarding facility issues, we have concerns for leaks in the cafeteria and gymnasium that are an ongoing issue. Although maintenance addresses these issues, they both show to be ongoing at the school. Additionally, we recently have had profound issues with the sound system in our gymnasium, needing this to be repaired or replaced.
v What is your plan to correct/address the major concern for the 2024-2025 school year?
Professional development opportunities are being provided for staff, including teacher mentor, new teacher academy and other opportunities from Raleigh County Schools. Data will be tracked regarding usage of Mystery Science and Character Strong, our newly-provided curriculum. Our school has a set, weekly time to teach with the Character Strong curriculum. The PBIS team will review behavior data and address ongoing issues and concerns. Monthly attendance incentives are provided and will continue. Incentives are provided for performance on WVGSA, as well as 9-week academic incentives are given. Regarding the sound system in the gymnasium, our school is willing to take on a portion of the cost it the sound system can be repaired or replaced.
v Identify what the Board of Education can do to assist your school in providing a high-quality education for your students.
1. Curriculum - Continued provision of Mystery Science, Reflex Math program, MathShelf for PreK and K, Character Strong.
2. Staff Development – Provision of professional development for science instruction to increase scores in that area. Continue to mentor the new teachers as well as administrative mentorship.
3. Personnel – Continued provision of special education staffing for our growing special education population. We request an interventionist to work with providing tier 3 intervention.
v Identify your school’s biggest accomplishment for the year.
Fairdale Elementary shows gains in Math and ELA scores on the WVGSA from the previous school year. For the first month of school our attendance rate is 4th out of the 17 elementary schools, an increase from the previous year.
v Please feel free to provide any additional information you wish to share with the Board.
Our LSIC committee is extremely thankful for the support received after last year’s LSIC requests, including the fencing of our playground for the safety of our students, as well as the additional staffing to meet the needs of our special education students.
